2009 International Dance Music Awards
IDMA Best Global DJ Nominees

Ferry Corsten
Tiesto
Deadmau5
ATB
Paul van Dyk
Carl Cox
Above & Beyond

Featured Nominee:
Armin van Buuren

There’s a pretty large crossover between these nominees and the ones for Best European DJ, isn’t there? One of the names that should jump out is Deadmau5; he’s nominated for Breakthrough DJ and Global DJ in the same year – quite an accomplishment. However, this has also been an insane year for Armin van Buuren. His album was a hit, his concerts were a hit, and yes, even his radio show drew 27 million a week. His trophy cabinet should be bursting any time now.

Featured Nominee:
Ferry Corsten

Let’s face it, having any one of these DJs spinning at your party would be a win. This list has DJMag’s top six ranked DJs covered, and looking at the nominees, an assembly of this much talent is pretty insane. Ferry Corsten’s 2008 has been a festival buffet, with stops in Malaysia, the States, Miami, and of course, the hometown Netherlands. The release of his third album, Twice in a Blue Moon, marks a welcome return to his trance forté, and if you haven’t already, check out “Radio Crash,” whose melodies have been a smash around the world.

idma best break through dj deadmau5

2009 International Dance Music Awards
IDMA Best Breakthrough DJ Nominees

Kyau & Albert
DJ Shah
Laidback Luke
Aly & Fila

Featured Nominee:
Deadmau5

Canadian DJ Deadmau5’s literally meteoric rise in the past two years has been highlighted with his collaborations with Kaskade (they are nominated in the Best Prog House/Trance Track category) and the release of Random Album Title, with singles that won him the title of Beatport’s most-selling artist in 2008. His first year on DJMag’s Best DJ Poll was spent at the #11 spot, tying for highest debut in the rankings’ history – if this isn’t breaking through, you might as well just scrap the category.

idma best pop dance track

2009 International Dance Music Awards
Best Pop Dance Track – Nominees

Womanizer – Britney Spears – Jive
Disturbia – Rihanna – Def Jam
4 Minutes – Madonna feat. Justin Timberlake and Timbaland – Warner Bros
Feedback – Janet Jackson – Island Def Jam
So What – Pink – LaFace Records
I Kissed a Girl – Katy Perry – Capitol

Featured Nominee:
Just Dance – Lady Gaga – Interscope

In this female-dominated category, almost every track has torn up both the dance floors and radio waves this year – every diva on the list (with the possible exception of Pink) has contributed her share of sweet pop dance to clubbers and remixers alike. However, major props have to be given to Lady Gaga for bringing some credibility back to American electro-pop. This may not be the best track off her debut The Fame, but it’s damn catchy, and has definitely put this rising artist on the map.

Steve Angello & Laidback Luke – Show Me Love Unofficial Video

Steve Angello & Laidback Luke hate the official video of their remake of Robin S ‘Show Me Love’ – so they have released their own!

After an epic saga, Steve Angello & Laidback Luke’s version of ‘Show Me Love’ finally gets a worldwide release in a few weeks’ time. When Steve and Luke’s close friend Hardwell got his hands on their gem of a track ‘Be’, he mashed it together with the classic Robin S vocal, which has inspired DJs and producers all over the world.

When a number of bootlegs and rip-off versions of the mash-up started circulating, Read the rest of this entry »

sensation party chile

Sensation
Saturday, March 14th 2009
Estación Mapocho – Chile

The very first edition of Sensation (formerly known as Sensation White) took place on July 1st 2000 as a tribute to Miles Stutterheim, the brother of ID&T founder and CEO Duncan Stutterheim who died in a car crash that year. Attendees were asked to dress in white, thus creating an image so staggering that the dress code has remained the same ever since.

To date, over half a million people around the world have experienced this spectacular theatrical dance and music phenomenon. Sensation has since expanded beyond Amsterdam, with shows in countries across Europe including Read the rest of this entry »

armin van buuren in and out of love

2009 International Dance Music Awards
Best Progressive House / Trance Track – Nominees

I Remember – Deadmau5 & Kaskade – Ultra Records
Open Your Heart – Dirty South & Axwell feat. Rudy – Axtone Records
The Longest Road – Morgan Page feat. Lissie – Nettwerk Records
Imagination (Tiesto Remix) – Jes – Magik Muzik/Ultra Records
Deep At Night – Ercola feat. Heikki L – Nervous Records

Featured Nominee:
In And Out Of Love – Armin van Buuren feat. Sharon den Adel – Armada/Ultra Records

This is possibly one of the more interesting (and therefore more difficult) categories to judge. For me, it’s a lose-lose situation because each and every nominee is really a quality track. I had to feature In And Out Of Love though, because even though this Dutch tag-team probably already has all the attention it could want with this song, the mention is well-deserved. There are a lot of trance vocalists out there, but Sharon den Adel just radiates indescribable sensuality through her vocals here, and adds so much to this Armin masterpiece that it really is as much his song as it is hers. Is it too farfetched to suggest that this would make a great Dutch national anthem?

above and beyond anjunadeep 01

Above and Beyond Anjunadeep Vol.1
Trance Music

Converts tend to emerge excitedly from their first Above & Beyond gig experience and ask ‘was that really trance?’ The answer is usually yes and no, for while Above & Beyond are proud of their role in defining the melodic trance sound and their synonymy with the quality end of the genre, trance is too small a word for what they do.

There’s no clearer example of this than the success of Anjunadeep, the trio’s melodic and progressive house offshoot that’s grown from being a promising sibling label to a dynamic and influential imprint in its own right, winning fans such as James Zabiela, Desyn Masiello, Eric Prydz, and Laurent Garnier along the way, and receiving a nomination for Best Record Label at DJ Mag’s Best of British Awards 2008. Grab a copy at Amazon.com

It’s a progression which brings us to ‘Above & Beyond Anjunadeep 01′, the label’s debut compilation. Read the rest of this entry »

idma best house garage track

2009 International Dance Music Awards
Best House / Garage Track – Nominees

People Make the World Go Round – Joi Cardwell – Nervous Records
Pjanoo – Eric Prydz – Pryda/Ultra Records
Can’t Stop – Quentin Harris feat. Jason Walker – Strictly Rhythm
Feedback – Janet Jackson – Island Def Jam
Delirious – David Guetta feat. Tara McDonald – Ultra Records

Featured Nominee:
Infinity 2008 – Guru Josh Project – Big City Beats

Remember that sax? This classic banger has been yanked out of the nineties and updated with fresh synths and a harder bass line. One thing hasn’t changed though (other than the iconic saxophone line): it still has a knack for sparking, let’s just say, spirited, debate among fervent devotees and people who are sick of hearing it at work every other day. How about another reinvention in twenty years?
