Winter Music Conference MiamiDo you know what the Winter Music Conference for the electronic music industry is about yet? It is staged in the beautiful and sunny Miami Beach Resort and Spa in Florida just 12 miles from the Miami airport. It has been running for 23 years now and expects 45,000 people during the week conference from March 25-29, 2008.

Not only is the Winter Music Conference a convention for pros in the industry but it has been known to give a major boost to fresh artists, DJ’s and other dance music professionals allowing them to reach great heights. It is where major deals begin and if you think the electronic music industry is small, you are gravely mistaken!

Fact: the Winter Music Conference mailing list is 140,000 people strong!

Fact: there are 400 separate events to chose from during the week all culminating into the Ultra Music Festival (in it’s 10th year) and expects to have close to 40,000 party people and the most sought after artists performing including Tiesto, Justice, David Guetta, Fedde Le Grand, Paul Van Dyk, and over 200 more. More info on the Ultra Music Festival.

Fact: Over 700 journalists from the International Press covering events in Miami during the conference!

Fact: Over 85 venues presenting events in Miami during WMC

Fact: Over 35 seminars and workshops covering all aspects of music development and the surrounding sub-culture (an invaluable resource)

So just looking at these few facts, you can begin to see that this is the most important conference you could ever attend if you want to be a successful artist/producer/record company in the electronic industry. And not only that but the current music industry is in a complete redevelopment and metamorphosis as CDR’s, MP3’s and download streams are forever changing the way people interact with this music…if you haven’t heard Vinyl is DEAD! Sad but true and yes, it’s time to move on…

Some other great points about the Winter Music Conference:

Last time I wrote about the 5 Elements of a Good Night Club, if you haven’t read that article have a look and you’ll see me getting into a little bit of why I thought the #1 most important element of a good night club was the DJ. In essence, it’s all about the music!

Donald Glaude

So is it really hard to be a great DJ? Or does it require a lot more than meets the eye? Let’s look at just 5 points that make a great DJ.

  1. Being ahead of the curve. How hard is it to be ahead of the curve? Well in my opinion if you want to make it as a DJ you have to give it your all, there is a ton of competition out there and you have to set yourself apart from the rest. Simple suggestion…get on the newsletter list of all the top mp3 download sites such as Beatport.com, Trackitdown.net, djdownload.com, etc. As you listen to the latest music being produced you’ll be able to see where the music is going and how it is changing (this comes with years of experience). Now you have one leg up.

  2. Master the art of mixing. Don’t be freaking lazy, you are a DJ and your art is to be able to blend two tracks together seamlessly. Immerse yourself in this, get books, watch videos (youtube is a great free source), ask friends to listen to your mixes and give you constructive feedback. Then when you post your set to a site (plug here for www.thefreshpage.com!) become part of the community and ask for feedback. The only way you can get better is by listening to this feedback.

  3. Be prepared when you have a gig. Plan your track listing out beforehand, in fact, plan out more than one track listing and gage the crowd and the night for which direction you want to take people. Practice these mixes several nights leading up to your gig and record them so you can review the mixes and think of ways to improve it. This sounds smart doesn’t it? How many dj’s do you think actually do this? Do they really not have time for it, or are they simply being too lazy and wasting too much time on facebook?

Envy My Music

Envy My Music made a repeat visit to Vancouver to shake things up again in Vancouver. Envy My Music started in a club called Cocoon in Germany and since launch in 2005, it has become the hottest place to be in Franfurt on a Saturday night. In every single corner of the club, it’s hard not to look at meet extravagant acrobats and costumed hotties. Every single one of your senses is stimulated at the same time and that is what makes a night at Envy My Music.

In essence, the concept behind Envy My Music is exactly what Vancouver needs to take this city to the next level in going out at night. Over the past few years promoters in this city haven’t really taken it stimulates us in any different way when going out to a club. What has happened in consequence are a lot of people in their late twenties/thirties staying home or going to see movies. Blasé, Blasé - I Say!

Eric Prdyz

One of Sweden’s sons’ graced us with their presence. A long list of great DJ’s coming from that region. With such great hits this summer “Call On Me” Prydz was sure to be a show not to miss. Vancouver people were mystified Saturday night at the infamous Sonar (previously The Town Pump). Prydz came on about midnight and rocked it out until close. The fans seemed happy to see this young remix master do his thing. A varied group of youngsters hit the dance floor in an amazing awe of lights. Big props to Savio and his team for the great stage set up and lights. The atmosphere was sure to pump the music lovers with its den of luxury. Can’t stress how impressed we all were. Can’t wait to see another son of Sweden who’s coming our way October 26th, don’t miss it. Read full bio of Eric Prydz
