Behrouz Interview – Pure Behrouz NYC

1. What was the first record you bought?
My first record was Cerrone’s Supernature

2. Who do you look up to in the scene?
People in my industry who have been working hard and have not given up and those who have supported other djs in the industry like Sven Vath (for what he did with Cocoon), Francois K (his music has evolved and he still has an amazing label and has stayed true to his sound and has not sold out), Carl Craig, and Danny Tenaglia.

3. What was your big break back in the early days?
I started DJ’ing over twenty years ago: I used to make mix tapes for all my friends and one day a friend of mine asked me to do a mix show for his fashion show in San francisco and the show went really well. From there, he started doing these parties once a month and asked me do to live shows. At one of the shows, one of the owners of the best club in San Francisco at the time, DV8, was there and he asked me to play at his club. I started playing at DV8 and became the resident DJ for 8 years.

4. You’ve played some of the biggest festivals and gigs in the world, what’s your next goal?
My next goal is to focus more on production and making music bombs. I also just had a baby girl so I want to focus more on spending time with my family. I am constantly on the road which takes a toll on your body.

5. What’s the best tip you could give to other dj’s when spinning at festivals?
You usually have an hour or an hour and a half and you have to play all your bombs, big records and don’t try to build up your set.

6. How do you think digital music formats such as .mp3 and .wav’s compare to vinyl and how is this changing the industry?
I am still one of the few American DJ’s still playing vinyl. In my opinion there is nothing like the sound of vinyl on a sound system. But, being that I am on the road constantly and with all the baggage restrictions now, the alternate digital music formats are simpler to travel with. Also, with digital format I can be sitting in a hotel room anywhere in the world and downloading music before my gigs which has helped a lot.

7. What’s your favorite thing to do when you aren’t spinning?
Spending time with my family and dog and spending time in my studio.

8. What major differences do you see in the American dance music scene as compared to the European scene?
The American scene is a little behind the European scene in terms of the clubs and the crowd that comes to listen to the djs. I feel like Europeans are more advanced in the music scene and what I mean that you can go play at many more underground clubs vs. the US where many of the underground clubs are non existent or have disappeared, like Twilo, Vinyl and many clubs in Miami that have turned into model and bottles clubs.

9. Do you have any pre-show rituals, phobias or superstitions before you spin? Is there anything you do to prepare yourself?
Believe it or not I am very superstitious. I have these old pair of tennis shoes that I love to wear at most of my shows. I usually have some ginseng before my gigs and make sure I am well fed because most of the time my sets are more than three or four hours so it takes a toll on my body if I am not well nutritioned.
