Top 10 Nightclubs in the World

Every clubber has “The Club.” Be it the place that is designated as the Saturday Spot, or that foreign nightclub that just can’t be forgotten, there is always a certain club that holds a cherished spot in almost every clubber’s heart. What follows is a list of ten of the most incredible nightclubs from around the world. I say “ten of the most incredible” because I’m sure that not everyone’s going to agree. Everybody looks for something different in “The Club.” It could be the crowd, the venue itself, the DJ, or a mash of everything, so I’m not going to tell you that this group is The best. But it’s pretty damn close – take a look…

Sankeys Nightclub

Sankeys

It’s not the biggest club around England, but in this case, size doesn’t matter. How many other clubs do you know are ex-mills? Their aim is for you to have a good time, and luckily, you’ll find it hard to be disappointed. Three rooms (The Bar, The Basement, and The Boutique) each give you a different flavour, but for pure dancing, The Basement’s the place to be. What really had Sankeys flying up DJmag’s Top 100 Clubs Poll, though, was their “increasingly on-point” DJ line-ups. Justice and Carl Craig are only two of the regulars; where else would you want to be?

Warung Nightclub

Warung

Next stop, Brazil. The party mood and rawness of nature that South America is famous for are fully infused in Warung. Surrounded by a beach and a rainforest, something about the passion of partying like mad amid the elements just feels right. If I had the use of a plane for a night, and could jet around the world to all the distant night clubs one after the other, this would be unquestionably be on the list. Add to that international DJs like Craig Vickers and Rowan Blades, and you’ve got all the exoticism you could ever want in a night club in Warung.

Guvenment Nightclub

The Guvernment

And… representing Canada… we have the Guvernment (you knew we had to have a Canadian club in here right?). But in all honesty, from an unbiased standpoint, this is one serious super club (nominated for Best Global Club in the International Dance Music Awards). With a capacity of 4000+, hydraulic light grids, and nine, count’em nine, specialized rooms, the Guvernment hosts more parties than Paris Hilton. You want futuristic? Go to the Orange Room. Feel like something mystical Moroccan? Try Tanja. Or just head up to the Skybar for a view of downtown Toronto that will leave you in awe. You can’t go wrong.

Pacha Ibiza Nightclub

Pacha Ibiza

Ibiza’s roster of night clubs is as impressive as their night clubs’ rosters of DJs. The leading club in this roster? Pacha. It contains a maze of five rooms each presenting a different atmosphere, and a restaurant that serves sushi. As Ibiza’s trailblazing night club, Pacha has gone through an elegant transformation throughout the years, and in addition, hosts DJs like David Guetta. Like the Guvernment, it has been nominated for Best Global Club at the IDMAs, and is fully deserving of this honour.

Fabric Nightclub

Fabric

Recently named the best club in the world (again) by DJmag, Fabric is a club that is universally acknowledged as being the best at what it does because it simply focuses on the heart of club culture: the music. Although Fabric has been graced by the presence of top DJs, it is most widely celebrated for bringing underground dance music and more obscure, but still talented DJs to the spotlight. Fabric was also the first club in Europe to house what it calls a “bodysonic” dancefloor: clubbers on the dancefloor can literally shake it to the beat because parts of the floor are hooked up to 400 bass transducers that pump out the music being played, right into the dancing bodies via their feet. With 25000 square feet of room to get shook in a club in which “there’s never been so much as a dud DJ,” Fabric more than deserves a spot in this list.

Space Ibiza Nightclub

Space Ibiza

Another nominee for Best Global Club (and another Ibizan club), Space does not lack any, as it was built on a sprawling parking lot. Its history is so deep-rooted in the growth of club culture that there is almost a kind of mutual respect between Space and the world-class DJs who have played there over the years. Extensive renovations have only improved this Ibizan paradise, and with its consistent Top 2 ranking in DJmag’s last few polls, Space is here to stay.

Womb Nightclub

Womb

Womb is a club in Japan.

If any derivative of the word “technology” has not crossed your mind yet… then I must say I’m very disappointed in you. As would be expected of a Japanese creation, Womb is ultramodern (DJmag calls it a “space station”), with first-class lights and sounds – with major emphasis on sounds. Womb features plenty of space on its sizeable dance floor, above which hangs one of Japan’s largest disco balls: 1.5m across.

Glass walls on the top floor overlooking everything?

A cracking sound system?

DJs like Paul Oakenfold and Sven Väth?

Womb does Tokyo proud.

Amnesia Nightclub

Amnesia

What is with Spain and its amazing night clubs? When the ice cannon welcomes you with a shower of dry ice, you know that you’ve arrived. As befits the night club crowned Best Global Club by the IDMAs, Amnesia’s sound system leaves little to be desired. Cream night at Amnesia always brings out the crowds, and the foam parties are inimitable. With a line-up that includes Armin van Buuren and Sven Väth, Amnesia has all its bases covered. What else would you expect from the best in the world?

Cocoon Nightclub

Cocoon

Cocoon is another club that is linked with Sven Väth, but unlike the others, this night club completely bears the stamp of this legendary DJ. You can’t help but feel like you are really in a cocoon, although maybe in an über-modern style of cocoon. Both visually and acoustically, this club’s design is awe-inspiring; there is a 100m across, 360 degree screen bounces synchronized lights and images off it like no other. Add to that stunning cocoon-like features like a 100m long iridescent “Membrane Wall” and actual “cocoons” (each with a minibar, light controls, and a sound system), and once you get into Cocoon, you won’t want to come back out.

Zouk Nightclub

Zouk

“Zouk” (zook) -noun

-origin: French Creole for “party”

1. a style of dance music that originated in Guadeloupe and Martinique, featuring Caribbean rhythms over a disco beat and played with electric guitars and synthesizers

2. one of the top clubs in Singapore

How big is Zouk? It was the first night club in Singapore to play House music, and today is all the rage with the nation’s clubbing crowd. Zouk actually isn’t a club; it’s three interconnected clubs: Zouk, Phuture, and Velvet Underground – you can get an idea of what these three spaces are like, both visually and musically, by their names. Phuture is futuristic and plays broken beats, Velvet Underground has exquisite velvet-covered walls and plays laid-back house and soul, and Zouk, the main dancing stage, plays a blend of everything. Want more proof of Zouk’s commitment to being the best in Southeast Asia? It makes a point of sending its DJs to Europe and the US on a regular basis for “re-orientation,” and to acquire new music. Next time you plan a trip to Singapore, don’t leave until you’ve experienced Zouk.

What’s your favorite nightclub?

brilliant article. I want to make it my mission to see how many of these clubs I can hit this year!

chris on April 12th, 2008 at 11:23 am #

Sorry, I really have to disagree with the Guvernment. Sure it has all the bells and whistles of a super-club, but lacks two basic fundamentals: Sound and a good vibe. Need to mention Canada? Try Stereo in Montreal.

ps. I live in Toronto and spend my weekends at Footwork ;)

feargal on April 14th, 2008 at 7:00 pm #

i’ve been to nearly half these clubs and agree they are amazing.but how can you list the best clubs in the world and not mention tresor in berlin???????

Franklin Datteub on June 27th, 2008 at 6:39 am #

Warung is a great club, but there is another club, called Green Valley, a few kilometers from Warung that is even better.
Going to Warung? Then check Green Valley in the next night.

Fabric was Amazing!

Dru on August 18th, 2008 at 9:28 am #

Out of these I have been to Amnesia, Space, Pacha, Guvernment, & Fabric. The U.S. has some nice looking clubs but majorly lacks good house music and a crowd that knows how to party without being typical roudy and annoying americans. Space & Fabric by far are number 1.

stevie on August 26th, 2008 at 2:17 am #

Have only attended fabric, but these will be something i want to attend !

C_Mac on September 3rd, 2008 at 6:12 pm #

Try Vancouver B.C. tons of great niteclubs there.

jf on October 7th, 2008 at 6:33 pm #

c_mac….

dont kid yourself…Vancouver has nothing. I live in Vancouver and if you liek top 40 its the place for you. But real house music and late nights are impossible in vancouver. Even in Canada, Vancouver is known to have a less than crazy nightlife. MTL, TO and Calgary are all better.

Damien on October 22nd, 2008 at 10:21 am #

People its apparent you have never been to serbia, yes maybe they dont have one club that stands out but over there, well lets just say you gotta c it to believe it. (Im from canada)

michael goodwin on November 10th, 2008 at 5:55 am #

how can you forget about one of the clubs in amsterdam!!!

Niles on November 14th, 2008 at 4:27 pm #

What? Not even a single club from Vegas! I dont believe that…what about Tryst or Pure or Rain? New York is missing as well.

Some other great clubs I have been to:
- Lux (Lisbon, Portugal)
- Nikki Beach (Miami, Florida)
- Platinum (Warsaw, Poland)
- Enigma (Bombay, India)
- Nautilus (Riga, Latvia)
- Hollywood (Tallinn, Estonia)

Razzmatazz in barcelona is huge like pravlige in ibiza- defo rate it..

Kale on January 31st, 2009 at 4:07 am #

I’m in the US Navy and stationed in Japan. It’s hard for me to go two weeks without a trip up to Womb. One of the best things about it, which isn’t mentioned above, is how exclusive and hard to find it is. There are no lights or signs on the outside at all, just a big rollaway door that could easily be anything. It’s the kind of place that is impossible to find unless you already know where it is.

I’ll be in Singapore later this year too, so I’ll be sure to check out Zouk, Phuture, and Velvet Underground.

dtp on February 3rd, 2009 at 11:13 pm #

LOL vancouver? are you kidding me with that? vancouver has the worst night life and anyone whos anyone that can even call themself a true clubber would know that! ya they have raves but barely any big names play at your damn rip off raves. the raves in vancouver are over priced and a horrible representation of true partying. I must say i’m so proud guvernment is among the top clubs in the world. i must go to ibiza though. Montreal is amazing as well although ppl cannot dance there

dj mag is an english magazine so its completly biased towards british clubs.it consistently puts fabric in the top 3,fabric is a great fun,but top 3 in the world no way.its all opinion in the end but i think you need to spend a few weeks in berlin to experience the best clubbing in the world(although i’ve never been to south america)

In Portugal forget Lux, it’s a nice club but with cheesy music and crowd. True clubbers go to Kremlin. Superb funktion one and turbosound, sound systems. It as been in top Portuguese clubs for 20 years. I,m from Lisbon. Music is top notch.

PW on May 25th, 2009 at 8:20 pm #

I’ve been all over the world, and the reason that you don’t see any NYC clubs on this list with the other great club cities of the world is because the top clubs in NYC cater to a more exclusive crowd, Quality over size. Higher end and smaller and more intimate. 1OAK, Pink Elephant, etc. The days of the NYC megaclubs are over. Trust me. It is better this way. NYC doesn’t want to be like Vegas or Ibiza. If you have ever been out to the Hamptons in the summer, you know what i’m talking about. Head to a club like Dune on a saturday night in the summer and you literally might be hanging next to Jay-Z, Paris Hilton or Leonardo Di Caprio. The reason that no one outside of those in the know in NYC have heard of these clubs is the exact reason why people like Jay Z like to hang out there.

This shall be a ticklist for me over the next year. I have already been to one pretty much every weekend of my life. Fabric deserves to be in this list because the line up, atmosphere, staff, people and sound system make it a truly amazing night out everytime. I have never been to fabric and had a bad night, I don’t think it’s possible.

Rescue in Laganas, Zante is very good. Although not a patch on Sankeys, Manchester. Brilliant music, great atmosphere, an excellent club. If you like house and electro its a definite must. Matter in London isn’t bad either. Went there to see high contrast last night and thought it was pretty good.

ctc on September 13th, 2009 at 7:02 am #

Buenos Aires (Pacha being one example) has great clubs. I notice Cancun did not get mentioned much either. As for Vancouver, I have lived around the world (including vancity for 4 years) and it may be one of the most beautiful cities but has horrible night life. It is brutal. But the girls are hot, so hey that really is what is most important. With that said, dont get married until you have been to Rio-
Brazil rocks.

I have travelled right around the world, visiting six of these clubs. If im honest, New Zealand boasts some of the most underated clubs in the world. most notably The Big Kumara in Wellington, or the Mad Cow in Christchurch. Margies in AUCKLAND is home to some of the most beautiful girls I have ever witnessed. Gardies in dunedin is also renowned for its fantastic music and outrageous woman. If your looking for a bit of spice and class, you cant go far wrong with Fringe Bar Wellington.

Folks, i’ve been to Fabric many many times, and it’s always awesome. I am from Glasgow, however, and The Arches is just as good. If you’re ever in town you have to go to Pressure or Death Disco at The Arches. Both are great nights in a great, great club. But no-one has even mentioned Glasgow’s Sub Club; the best small club on the planet. If you want to experience a truly awesomely fabulous night out, then get on down to Optimo every sunday @ Sub Club. There is not a better night out anywhere in London or Glasgow or anywhere else i’ve ever been clubbing for that matter (sadly that doesn’t include Ibiza).
