DJ Mag Top 100 DJ's
Trance and progressive house were again big winners in DJ Mag’s controversial reader’s poll.

For a sixth year running, the top spot went to a trance jock – this time 30-year-old Dutchman Armin Van Buuren, who took the number one spot from last year’s winner Paul Van Dyk. The undeniably huge Tiesto (who has 307,887 friends on MySpace) nabbed second place, while progressive house stalwarts John Digweed and Sasha rounded out the top five.

“It’s a really big honour, I’m kind of stunned, y’know?” Van Buuren told DJ Mag. “It’s basically a dream come true!”

Curiously, plenty of votes came in for acts not really known for their DJing, including The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Trentemoller, BT and Booka Shade.
This year’s poll was steeped in controversy, with a number of DJs, including Christopher Lawrence and DJ Dan, being disqualified amid accusations of vote-rigging.

This year DJ Mag collated the 345,000 cast votes in-house for the first time, and also instituted new rules to cut down on multiple-voting, a persistent problem with Internet polls. “This year, I made a decision to investigate votes where the same IP address appeared over 50 times for the same person,” explains publisher James Robertson on the DJ Mag website. Hard techno also made a traditionally big showing with Umek, Carl Cox, Valentino Kanzyani, Marco Bailey all making the list, while DJ Mag’s strong UK focus snagged places for local radio names such as Pete Tong, Judge Jules and Lisa Lashes. Psychedelic trance also proved popular with the likes of Infected Mushroom, Astrix and Yahel all placing highly.

1 Armin Van Buuren – Finally. Five years after entering the Top 10 of our DJmag Top 100 DJs poll, Armin van Buuren has been crowned the World’s No.1 DJ.

2 Tiësto – After winning three years in a row before losing his crown to Paul van Dyk last year, Tiësto once again came close to lifting the No.1 title.

3 John Digweed – John Digweed is well accustomed to long journeys. That’s largely a function of his globetrotting lifestyle of course, something he’s more than happy to talk about when DJmag tracks him down at Dallas airport.

4 Paul Van Dyk – From the intense production involved in ‘In Between’ — the artist album he’s been perfecting for the last three years — to the high-energy live sets at the world’s biggest dance festivals, it’s been an exceedingly busy year for Paul van Dyk.

5 Sasha – It’s been a period of change for Sasha. One of the world’s most widely travelled DJs, he cut back on his club activities during the first half of the year to spend more time in his studio in New York.

6 Above & Beyond – Above & Beyond’s vault from innovative trance trio to globe-trotting DJ superstars is now complete.

7 Carl Cox – “Over the years, people have got used to labeling me a techno DJ,” reckons Carl Cox. “But I’ve been a drum & bass DJ, a house DJ, a hardcore DJ, a soul DJ — some called me a trance DJ in my F.A.C.T. days. I just try not to be pigeon-holed.”

8 Ferry Corsten – Architect, pioneer, instigator — refer to him anyway you want. Ferry was unquestionably the man behind 1999’s Great Dutch Trance Breakout, splitting the door wide open with ‘Out Of The Blue’, ‘Carte Blanche’ and ‘Gouryella’.

9 Infected Mushroom – Just two years after breaking into the Top 100 as one of the highest new entries in history, the boundary busting psy-trance overlords have finally smashed their way into the elusive number. Infected Mushroom — Amit ‘Duvdev’ Duvdevani and Erez Eizen — are Top 10 gunners at last.

10 David Guetta – Despite spinning from the age of 17 in various Parisian venues and now onto his third artist album, this was nevertheless the year that David Guetta really became a household name in house music.
